Families have two ways to connect their child with Santa on screen: a live video call, or a pre-recorded personalized video. Both can be lovely. They are not the same, and the right choice depends on your child, your schedule and what kind of memory you want. This guide lays out the difference without pushing you either way.
The short version
- A live Santa video call is a 10-minute, one-on-one conversation on Google Meet. Santa talks with your child in real time. It is $39, paid in full at booking, and offered at limited times between November 28 and December 24, 2026.
- A personalized Santa video message is a recorded video of about 30 seconds. Santa uses your child's name, age, wish list and fun facts. It is $19, delivered as a private link to watch and download.
What "live" changes
On a live call, Santa and your child interact. If your child says, "I have a new puppy named Biscuit," Santa can respond. If they ask a question about the reindeer, he can answer. The conversation can go places no script can.
That is the big advantage: responsiveness. A child who loves to talk gets a partner. A child who shows a stuffed animal gets a reaction. For a chat that feels like talking to Santa in person, a live call is the closest thing at home.
There are tradeoffs too. A live call needs a set time. You have to be available, with a device and a connection. Your child has to be in the mood. A tired or shy child may not be at their best. Times are also limited, so the slot you want may not be open.
What "pre-recorded" changes
A video message trades interaction for convenience and permanence.
No appointment
You order and wait for the email. Videos are delivered starting December 10 and within 3 days after that.
Rewatchable
Download it and play it as many times as your child likes. You can keep it with family videos.
Low pressure
A shy child can just watch. Nobody has to speak.
Shareable
You choose who gets the private link, such as grandparents.
Lower price
It is $19, versus $39 for the live call.
The tradeoff is that it is one-way. Santa cannot respond to your child. And it is about 30 seconds, not 10 minutes.

Which fits which child?
A talkative preschooler or school-age child
Choose the live call. They will probably have a lot to say, and they deserve a response. Prepare with what to ask Santa.
A shy or slow-to-warm child
Consider starting with a video message. They can watch from the couch, on their terms. If they love it, a live call may feel less intimidating. Our toddler call guide has more.
A toddler
Either can work, depending on temperament. A parent on the couch with a toddler on their lap often works well with a live call. A message is a nice add-on that the toddler can watch repeatedly.
Siblings
Siblings are welcome to be on the live call (add their names and a wish or two in the "fun facts" box). If you order messages, order one for each child so each gets their own name and details.
A child who is a skeptic
An older skeptical child may enjoy a conversation where they can ask good questions. Live is usually better here, since the mood depends on the back-and-forth.
Which fits which schedule?
If you are planning ahead, the live call lets you pick a day and build an evening around it. If you are short on time, the message arrives within 3 days and does not need a time slot. Orders for messages close on December 21. Read last-minute Christmas surprise: Santa message if you are close to the deadline.
For Christmas Eve specifically, see Christmas Eve call from Santa. Live times are limited, so booking early matters most there.
Can you do both?
Yes, and plenty of parents think of them as a pair. A video message can build excitement in the days before a live call. A live call can be followed by a message that your child can rewatch. They are separate orders, with separate details, and you can share different fun facts in each. You might also order a message as a gift for a relative to forward to a grandchild.
What both have in common
Both products start with the same details from you: name, age, wish list and fun facts. Both use a real-beard Santa in a velvet suit. Both are about making your child feel known. The quality of the details you write has more effect than which you choose. For writing ideas, see fun facts to tell Santa.
Our simple recommendation
- Want a conversation and have a flexible evening? Live call.
- Want a keepsake or a quick gift? Video message.
- Not sure? Think about whether your child would rather talk or watch. If they would talk, go live.
